Security Alarm System – The Basics

Moving to a new premise? Not sure what the new neighbourhood is like? Do you feel stressed when you’re alone at the office or in your own home of a night time? Having a security alarm system installed can provide you peace of mind and overcome these issues. Read on to find out about the security alarm system basics…

What is a security alarm system?

A security alarm system is a series of devices installed in a premise which covers entry points or areas where high valued items are kept. In the event any criminal attempts to enter into the premise via these entry points, the alarm system will trigger its sirens which deters the criminal to leave due to the uncomfortably high noise level it creates. Additionally this can be used a visual deterrent to show the property is protected.

Common components of an alarm system

Control Panel
This is the brain of your alarm system which powers and communicates with all system components. This is usually hidden in a cupboard, if tampered with the entire system fails.

Keypad/Touchpad
This allows you to arm and disarm your alarm system by entering a numerical code of your choosing (usually 4 digits).
Keypads should be installed as a separate device from the control panel to increase your level of security. As a tampered keypad won’t shut down your alarm system, where as a tampered control panel will shut down the entire security system.

Movement detectors
Detects movement which sends signals to your control panel to determine if your sirens are to sound, only if your system is armed.
Pet friendly detectors are available, to avoid your pets from triggering the alarm.

Reed switches
Reed switches are placed on your doors and windows. Reed switches are a two part magnet, one part goes on the door/window and the other part goes on the infrastructure of the home. When a window or door is closed these two magnets are together. In the event they’re separated e.g. a door or window is opened or smashed, this will activate the alarm sirens.

Internal/External Sirens
These devices are located inside and outside which create the loud siren sound when your alarm system is activated by a movement detector or a reed switch. External sirens also have a strobe light which shows the alarm has been triggered long after the sirens stop.

Portable Remotes
This keychain device allows you to arm and disarm your system at the touch of a button for convenience, with the addition of a panic button inbuilt into the remote.

How does a security alarm system work?

An alarm system works by having two states, armed and disarmed. The alarm systems sirens are activated if your system is armed and a movement detector or reed switch device is triggered. More advance devices can trigger the sirens, but predominately those being movement detectors and reed switches.

Additionally you can manually activate your sirens via your keypads panic buttons or via your portable keychain remote. This has an inbuilt portable panic button when no one is at the office or you’re home alone and you hear something that doesn’t sound right you, when required you can push the panic button which activates the sirens. This provides you peace of mind knowing you can deter any unwanted activity with the touch of a button.

Other benefits of having a security alarm system installed

Back to base monitoring service

Imagine if you could get notified of any situation that may occur with your alarm system. It’s now a reality, alarm monitoring allows us to call you when your alarm system is triggered and notify you of the situation. From the information we provide, you have access to police, fire, ambulance and guard dispatching services. This allows you to action your alarm system in real time, rather than finding out you have been broken into many hours later. Furthermore your keypads panic button will become active and alert the relevant emergency service.

Partial arming

Sleeping alone and working by yourself in an office at night can be frightening. With the introduction of partial arming this provides relief to such a situation. Partial arming means some devices can be armed whilst others are disarmed, you can customise which devices you would like to be armed and disarmed with this feature. For example you may choose to arm all your reed switches on your doors and windows but leave your motion detectors unarmed. This gives you the freedom to move around your home/office whilst preventing anyone from entering the premise.

Insurance discounts

Insurance discounts may be obtained by having a professional security alarm system installed. Additional discounts can be obtained for having a back to base monitored alarm. This may differ between insurance providers so it’s best to check with your insurance provider to see what discounts you can receive.

If you’re looking for peace of mind and that extra sense of security look no further than obtaining a security alarm system; this may be your best investment yet. This not only secures the premise but those who are inside also feel at ease with it, especially with a back to base monitoring service and 24/7 access to police, fire and ambulance.
